Jim posted some words concerning upcoming changes:

I think my tagline says “everything in life changes, including camera specs and delivery dates. Count on it.”

This is more succinct than you can imagine. You should expect a severe change coming… like a tsunami.

Jarred Land wrote some Specs of the upcoming RED EPIC Canon Mount.

  • These will start to ship to customers on September 9th.
  • Deposits will open on RED.COM in the store in the next couple days. Price for the smart Titanium Canon mount is $2000.
  • The Titanium mounts are all machined out of solid Titanium.
  • Current EPIC builds all support Iris control over the mount. An early AF build will be released around the time when the mounts ship. This will include basic touchscreen autofocus.
  • After release You don’t need separate builds for different mounts.. AF support for Canon and Nikon etc. will all be integrated into the ” normal ” EPIC builds, so you can switch from PL to Canon mount to Nikon mount all with the same camera build.
  • Speaking of switching, it is a field safe procedure ( in a clean area ) and literally involves unscrewing 4 bolts and swapping mounts.. Then check back focus ( if needed )
  • The Canon lens mount is “SMART” which means it controls camera Iris, Image Stabilization, and Autofocus electronically, via the various control options with EPIC ( touch screen, side handle, REDMOTE )

Some news regarding EPIC and so by Jim Jannard of RED:

There are some significant updates and changes that I would like to share…

1. EPIC-Ms are being built at a rapid pace. There is no waiting if you want to buy an EPIC-M starting tomorrow. Supply is limited. Just remember that these are still pre-production cameras and firmware upgrades will be necessary to enable some remaining features. EPIC-Ms have a 2 year warranty.

The EPIC-M program has helped us tune up for beginning EPIC-X production late August and full swing production early September.

2. EPIC-X will ship in the following order… Stage 2, Stage 3, Stage 3.5, Stage 4. We will not begin to ship the next stage until the orders from the previous stage have been completed. If you don’t want to wait, buy an EPIC-M.

3. Given the tragedy in Japan, EPIC-X production was delayed. The other side effect is that prices of many things have gone up. Given this, we are announcing a price increase on some items that will take effect on January 1st, 2012. If you have your order and deposit in before Dec. 31, 2011 you will get the old price. Any new orders placed after Jan. 1, 2012 will be charged the new price. Price increases in bold.

4. Stage 2 was changed recently. The newest package includes an EPIC-X Brain, Titanium PL Mount, Side SSD Module, 5″ Touchscreen LCD, REDmote, Module Adaptor, Pro Battery Module, 2 REDvolt Batteries and Travel Charger. $28,000 less $8500 credit and keep your RED ONE. Net price $19,500.

5. Stage 3 will reflect similar changes to the package as Stage 2. Stage 3 package price is $28,000 less $17,500 and trade in your non-executed RED ONE. Net due is $10,500.

6. Stage 3.5 is the same as Stage 3 except you receive an EPIC-X Brain only and not the complete Stage 3 package. Net due is $10,500.

7. Stage 4 is a purchase only of an EPIC-X Brain for $29,500 (includes upgraded Titanium PL Mount).

Additional note: We have discontinued the aluminum PL mount option for EPIC.

Sorry for format… tabs don’t seem to work posting.

Please note: EPIC-X Brain price was $27,500 + $500 for aluminum mount = $28,000. Since the aluminum mount is no longer an option, the current EPIC-X Brain is really $27,500 + $2000 for Ti PL Mount = $29,500. Same goes for 2012 price of EPIC-X Brain. $34,500 + $2000 = $36,500 including Ti PL Mount. Sorry about the oversight.

It’s here. It’s hot. It’s Technicolor CineStyle Picture Style for Canon EOS Cameras.

Get it here: I want that damn sweet Picture Style

Here’s what you need to do to get it working:

1. Requirements:

  • Canon EOS DSLR camera
  • Canon EOS Utility v2.6 or later
  • PC running Windows 7 / Vista / XP; or Mac running OS X 10.5 / 10.6
  • USB cable
Note: you can find the latest Canon EOS Utility at: Canon.com

2. How to load Technicolor CineStyle into your Canon EOS camera:

  • Ensure that EOS Utility v2.6 or later is installed on your computer
  • Download the Technicolor CineStyle Picture Style file using the links below
  • Connect your camera to your computer using the appropriate USB cable
  • Note: for the EOS 5D Mark II you may need to set “Communication” to “PC connect.” in the camera’s menu
  • Start the Canon EOS Utility
  • Select “Camera settings/Remote shooting” on the main window
  • Once the capture window opens, click the camera icon
  • Click “Register User Defined style” under “Shooting menu”
  • Once the new page “Register Picture Style File” opens, select one of User Def. 1, 2 or 3 at the top of the new page
  • Click the open file icon
  • Select the CineStyle.pf2 file you’ve just downloaded
  • Click on OK

Congratulations, the Technicolor CineStyle Picture Style is now loaded in your camera! You should confirm that the Picture Style has been properly loaded by pressing the Picture Style selection button at the back of the camera and using the thumbwheel on top of the camera to scroll through the styles

3. Recommended Canon EOS camera settings with Technicolor:

Based on Technicolor’s usage and testing of its CineStyle Picture Style, we recommend the following camera settings to optimize the image quality of your Canon EOS camera:

  • Sharpness: 0
  • Contrast: -4
  • Saturation: -2
  • Color Tone: 0
  • ISO: a multiple of 160

4. Post-processing for Technicolor CineStyle:

Acquisition with Technicolor’s CineStyle will generate what appears to be a flat, de-saturated looking image. While this image may appear unappealing and undesirable, it is in fact an ideal starting point for post-production and color correction.

To properly color correct and/or view footage shot with Technicolor CineStyle we recommend utilizing a S-curve shaped look-up table (LUT) in your editing or color correction application. You may download such a LUT using the links provided.

If your editing or color correction application does not offer the ability to import and use LUTs, other controls like the ASC CDL, Lift/Gamma/Gain, or Offset/Power/Slope can be used to color correct the image.

Dave McGavran of Adobe just posted new details at REDUSER.net

Hi Guys,

Dave here… I teased you last week because I couldn’t talk fully then. Well we announced CS5.5 and I want to post a few of my thoughts on this board about how this helps the RED workflow. We try our best to keep you fully informed and I don’t hide any info that I am ready to disclose so here it goes:

  1. We added second system sound, this was asked for by all you guys. It works great and easy.
  2. We fixed all known timecode issues with RED footage and audio sync.
  3. We worked with RED on some stability fixes that should make everything better.
  4. We added all the current color settings that you get in RED Cine.
  5. We added histograms and a curve editor.
  6. We significantly improved importing FCP import including work on making FCP red stuff import better.

Next we have an EPIC Labs release planned for really really soon after 5.5 hits the streets. This will have more stuff we couldn’t get into 5.5.

  1. EPIC support!
  2. EPIC HDR support. (I will post more on the specifics of this later. I am working with the excellent guys at fxguide to make sure this works well)
  3. Second head out of the red source settings dialog in PPro. So you can see your corrections on a second monitor.
  4. On a big monitor you get bigger source settings.
  5. You will have the option to respect camera metadata for flipping images. Although it will be faster on the timeline.

Whats up with Rocket?

We improved performance on Rocket in ppro. 4k full res no dropped frames using rocket on windows. A drop or two is still sometimes visible on the mac due to apple hardware/software issues. Epic footage plays in real time at half/res with 1 rocket. 2 rockets and it can play full res 5k in real time no dropped frames. This was demoed in the JMR booth.

Plus all the other great features in ppro and as always we made things faster, better and more stable.

This is all 5.5 based. So get it and and give us feedback. I want all RED movies edited in PPro and Effects editing done in AE. We are listening to your feedback and incorporating it where we can and as fast as we can so keep up the suggestions.

I am now working directly on the ppro team so I will be gathering all the notes you guys have posted in this forum and bringing that directly into our planning.

Cheers

Dave
